Product Photographer Based in Miami

While people tend to focus their energies on the final product, we must not forget about the initial processes. Here is a photo of three stainless steel mixing bowls, behind them, kitchen utensils; often the first resource in beginning a recipe.

product photography mixing bowls

Tom and I believe that it is better to tackle the task in steps rather than an all guns blazing approach. This brings forth better results than the latter. As you can’t make an omelet without cracking an egg, you can’t make passionfruit infused challah bread without pouring in the first teaspoon of yeast.

On social media one usually sees the final product of the meal more so than the actual process. A piece of meat laying on a plate in a deadpan ceremony of iPhone’s cameras and unhinged hashtags. While pages like Tasty and YouTube channels like FoodWishes showcase the processes, why not focus more on the organic steps? The step-by-steps are often the most thrilling and provide a feeling of accomplishment that outshines the quick shot of the $15 smoothie bowl.

Portrait of Sarah Kouri by Miami Photographer Tom Clark

What Tom and I like about this shoot is the minimalism: wall, mat, Sarah, Floor. We have a strong minimalist philosophy; no ornamental additions to the photo nor superfluous adjectives in this description.

Tom finds not only solace in this motion but also a bit of a comedic irony. Much of the commercial photography business requires Tom to embrace consumerism while his actual preference is to ignore the urge to consume.

Working with Sarah gave Tom a break from business and to correlate his minimalistic ideals with yoga. The only requirement to perform the archaic practice is your presence.

Sarah in pyramid pose. Her pose is strong, determination in her face. Not even a strong gust could knock her over.

The ladies of The Project Theatre by Miami Portrait Photographer Tom Clark

I had the privilege of shooting the directors of The Project [theatre.] A Miami-based company that was started from scratch. Each day the ladies of The Project [theatre] work to inspire a new generation of theater goers by infusing the spectator with the environment of the story they’re telling.

Gladys Ramirez (Right) and Elayne Bryan (Left) are two hard-working females that strive to push boundaries in theater scene and won’t take “no” for an answer. The concept behind  The Project [theatre] is to take the audience out of their seats and immerse them in the play. Their passion and commitment enriches Miami’s melting pot of diversity and culture.

Miami Photographer Tom Clark Now Offers Food Photography

Tom Clark is a commercial photographer based in Miami offering professional photography services in advertising, celebrity portrait, architectural, interior, product, food and lifestyle assignments throughout the U.S.

Mango Salsa by Miami Photographer Tom Clark

Everyone seems to be a food photographer these days, and it makes sense. Well prepared food can be very attractive and we need to keep our social media feeds updated with something. With so many cell phone photographers out there flooding the market with imagery I find it’s more important than ever for professionals to develop a style and an understanding of lighting and composition that goes beyond the basics. It’s easier than ever to get your work out there, but it’s more difficult to stand out from the crowd.

Food is in my top three of reasons to get out of bed, so it makes sense for me to focus on food photography. As I grow in my profession I find a narrowing field of desirable subject matter. I used to offer it all, but realize now the best way to provide honest and authentic results in photography is to have actual interest in the subject.

With thoughts of creating a food specific portfolio and fresh mangoes dropping from the tree in the backyard, two worlds collided. Stay tuned as more images from the soon to be released food photography gallery are completed.

New River Gorge Bridge by Miami Photographer Tom Clark

new river gorge bridge

Photographers visiting Fayetteville, WV may experience an irresistible attraction to the New River Gorge Bridge. Every photographer knows it’s been done before, still we can’t help ourselves. This is one of the highest vehicular bridges in the world made of a humbling 88 million pounds of steel and cement.

On a recent climbing trip I took advantage of a rest day to find the ideal shot, which led me to Fayette Station Bridge (a nearby, smaller bridge with this unobstructed view). The next morning I woke and forced myself out of the tent before dawn. We made it to the location just as the fog was beginning to clear and the sun was rising. Luckily, the early morning effort was matched by nature’s good graces and an image was captured. After all, it’s a long drive from Miami and we lugged the camera gear all the way.

Unicef Collaboration: Miami Director of Photography Tom Clark

1 in 11 children in the world are out of school and even more are not receiving a quality education. Serena Williams teamed up with Lionel Messi, UNICEF, FUNDACIO FC BARCELONA, and Reach Out To Asia to help change this statistic. I was lucky enough to participate in this campaign as a director of photography for portions filmed in South Florida.

Working on set with Serena Williams was a great pleasure. It was an inspiration meeting someone who is simply the best in their field, and at the same time willing to take time for others and volunteer a huge presence for a great cause.

707 Boeing Interior and Exterior by Miami Photographer Tom Clark

707 boeing by Miami Photographer Tom Clark

707 boeing by Miami Photographer Tom Clark

This week’s photo is a two for one deal. After photographing the interiors and exterior of this 707 Boeing for Principal Air Services, I had a difficult time choosing which image to post.

It was a great experience working with the crew and staff at Commercial Jet in Miami, and these two images, when placed together help to provide an idea of what that experience was all about.

From a photographers stand point, an airplane like this is a sort of combination between a large product, and an interior shoot. It was an exciting challenge to light the massive exterior and to reveal the spacious and luxurious spaces inside.

Designed by Janel Kuhl of the Coconut Grove Gallery

After studying under and working with some of the top architectural and interior photographers in Miami, I am excited for any chance to bring my own photogrpahy style to this genre.

This bedroom, designed by Janel Kuhl of Coconut Grove Gallery & Interiors, provided a dynamic and interesting work space with fun geometric qualities and colors.

On top of practicing sustainable building and design techniques, Janel educates clients and colleagues on the matter so they may carry on the positive impact.

Miami Beach Art Deco

Art Deco scene from Miami's South Beach

Art Deco in Miami's South Beach

Miami offers many great locations for photographers to shoot at. One of the more well known areas is the art deco distrct in South beach along Ocean Drive.

As a professional photographer in Miami it could only be a matter of time before I went down there myself. The area has a much different vibe at five thirty AM than throughout the night.

Parking is never an issue this early in the morning, and the only partiers left are those who are truly dedicated to seeing the sunrise.

The early morning presents opportunities to a photographer such as this one in which time seems to stand still just for you.

Mountains of Juneau, Alaska

Juneau AK

arial view of Juneau mountain

On a recent trip to Juneau, Alaska to visit two great photographers (and friends from school) Brandon Hauser and Kenneth Moriarty, I found myself reaching a realization:

Of the hours spent hiking up mountains, I could not find the right scene to represent AK the way I saw it. However, it was during a short helicopter ride that I grabbed this fleeting view with my point and shoot Canon G10.

The mountain’s size is as evident as the depth of the wilderness. The weather is as dramatic in this as my expectations were to capture amazing images in Alaska. Luckily for me, sometimes a snap shot is all it takes.

Portraits with a Holga by Miami Photographer Tom Clark

Holga Portrait

Portraits of Emily Noe shot on a Holga by Miami photographer Tom Clark

As a professional photographer I spend a lot of time following the rules of composition and exposure. It’s nice to give myself a break now and again by loading 120 film in the holga and  letting fate play a role in the outcome of my images.

The holga is cheap, lightweight, and easy to use so there is no real excuse for me not to bring it on bike rides through Miami or on camping trips.

I spend a lot of time being a commercial, fashion, and portrait photographer, but I hardly take any photos for myself that will be appreciated down the line as souvenirs. The holga helps record memories that look just like memories.

Miami Grrrl

Miami Grrrl

Miami Grrrl

This photograph was taken with the intentions of using color to create balance in a composition.

I am currently working on a project that causes me to concentrate on the different aspects of photo composition. In this case the placement of colors in the frame determines how the image is viewed (or at least that was my original goal.) Most often I am met with surprise between starting to compose a shot and finishing.

I feel that the color in this photograph creates balance but it is not the only compositional element that has a strong presence. I chose colors that would stand out, but the lines in this image compete heavily to control how it is viewed.

Broad Rembrandt Lighting Pattern

Emily Noe Portrait by Miami Photographer Tom Clark

black and white portrait by Miami photographer Tom Clark

Creating this photograph took me back to the days of photography school, in which I spent hours in the studio perfecting the various lighting patterns. The one shown here is a broad Rembrandt.

A current project that I am working on (one that cannot be named yet) required that I provide examples of the differnt styles of lighting and different lighting patterns. It was a good time working with Emily and a great refresher course for me.

We went through the Paramount, Loop, Split, and Rembrandt. I also, threw in a few of my own. As the project is closer to being completed I will tell you guys all about it.

Miami photographers have a short trip to an expansive wilderness

expansive wilderness not far from Miami

Florida trees

South Florida provides a photographer with an expansive wilderness, and taking the time to explore it can be very satisfying. Just be sure to check the weather reports or you may end up dealing with extreme heat and mosquitoes or heavy rain.

Jonathan Dickenson State park is located just over an hour North of Miami and has primitive campsites that get you pretty far away from it all. It provides a nice setting for setting up camp and taking some nice photographs.

For me the trees are the most interesting aspect of the Florida wilderness and I hoped to capture that appreciation in this photo of the week.

Jimbo’s in Miami’s Virginia Key

Miami Photographer Shoots at the Jimbo's Bus

Miami Photographer Shoots at the Jimbo's Bus

Every photographer in Miami has probably shot at or at least heard about shooting at Jimbo’s on Virginia Key. After being hired to photograph a story for local model and talent Alejandro Mazzieri I decided it was time that I have a shoot there.

The location was suiting for the model’s style and I’ve heard talk of changes to come as far as Jimbo’s is concerned. Had I missed the opportunity to shoot there it would have been a shame.

This busted up bus is amazing and the whole location is sort of a playground for photographers. Perhaps the best part of the location is the shrimp and beer though.

Point Blank City’s Young Souf

Miami photographer shoots Point Blank City's Young Souf at the Playhouse

Miami photographer shoots Point Blank City's Young Souf at the Playhouse

The perfect location is one that will test the limits of photographers. For instance, this abandoned playhouse in the Coconut Grove section of Miami was a great setting for photographing Point Blank City’s Young Souf. However, to get the perfect shot we knew it was necessary to make it onto the roof. Attention is the enemy of a geurilla photographer but we took our chances and climbed atop the building for the whole town to see.

With luck and light on our side we were able to get some great shots and vacate the premises on good terms. Now we have proper images to serve as the album artwork for Young Souf’s upcoming mixtape Gangsta Muzik.

Blue Moon Over Miami Skyline

Blue Moon Over Miami Skyline by Photographer Tom Clark

Blue Moon Over Miami Skyline by Photographer Tom Clark

As a photographer I feel that this New Year’s Eve was not about preparing for a ball drop in Times Square, but about embracing the full moon’s rise for the second time in December.

This blue moon could not have had better timing in Miami as it rose in the East just two minutes after the sun set in the West. By the time it was coming up over the city’s skyline there was just enough light left from the day for me to capture this scene with my camera.

2009 turned out to be a good year for finding interesting jobs and meeting many great people along the way. I am looking forward to an even better 2010.

Photographer shoots urban camping in Miami

Urban Camping in Miami

Urban Camping in Miami

Photographers in Miami have a tendency to shoot in locations that are well known by most local photographers as great locations. This causes a panic in me that drives me to seek out new and distinguishable settings.

This week I teamed up with Emily Noe (model, hair & makeup artist, wardrobe stylist, etc.) on a self produced fashion editorial assignment.

The theme was urban camping, the wardrobe was thrifty, and the production style was based on guerilla mobility.

This photo gave us a chance to put on a show for the commuters waiting for the bridge. Stay tuned to see the rest of the shoot in the soon to come editorial gallery

Find more of Tom Clark’s work at his photographer portfolios.

Being a photographer makes camping more fun and camping makes being alive more fun.

My father was in Miami for Thanksgiving and over the weekend we had an opportunity to camp on the beach in Long Key State Park in the Florida Keys.

This was a perfect time to take a portrait of my dad Frank Clark and my dog Scott Ballentine.

The contrast between  cool moon light and the warm light from fire and flashlights always motivates me to capture the scene around the camp site.

The styles and concepts span from the 50’s to the present and Joe was perfect for the job. His look is versatile which allowed us to experiment and have variety.
