Thomas and Ashlee from Extremis by Miami Photographer Tom Clark

Ashlee Anvik and Thomas Wynants think it’s time you get some outdoor furniture.

Thomas, a proud Belgian, met Montana-native Ashlee in the U.S. and soon after they set out to take the Wynants family business to the American market. Extremis designs and manufactures outdoor furniture, or “tools for togetherness.” The company’s approach is “Don’t make anything, unless it is both necessary and useful … and if it is, don’t hesitate to make it beautiful,” a minimalist and eco-friendly philosophy that Tom and myself can fully support.

While we do love our friends, Ashlee and Thomas, we must also love the globalization and interconnectedness taking place every second of every day. The advent of AirBNB made it possible for this connection to happen, combined with our guests ambitious and non-laconic personalities.

They were able to feel at home and a connection soon ensued. We bonded under the umber night sky, eating a dinner of cheeseburgers with a side of vibrant, creamy succotash in the backyard; all while discussing sleek Belgium designed furniture (seriously worth checking out) and of course, world politics.

Product Photographer Based in Miami

While people tend to focus their energies on the final product, we must not forget about the initial processes. Here is a photo of three stainless steel mixing bowls, behind them, kitchen utensils; often the first resource in beginning a recipe.

Tom and I believe that it is better to tackle the task in steps rather than an all guns blazing approach. This brings forth better results than the latter. As you can’t make an omelet without cracking an egg, you can’t make passionfruit infused challah bread without pouring in the first teaspoon of yeast.

On social media one usually sees the final product of the meal more so than the actual process. A piece of meat laying on a plate in a deadpan ceremony of iPhone’s cameras and unhinged hashtags. While pages like Tasty and YouTube channels like FoodWishes showcase the processes, why not focus more on the organic steps? The step-by-steps are often the most thrilling and provide a feeling of accomplishment that outshines the quick shot of the $15 smoothie bowl.

Portrait of Sarah Kouri by Miami Photographer Tom Clark

What Tom and I like about this shoot is the minimalism: wall, mat, Sarah, Floor. We have a strong minimalist philosophy; no ornamental additions to the photo nor superfluous adjectives in this description.

Tom finds not only solace in this motion but also a bit of a comedic irony. Much of the commercial photography business requires Tom to embrace consumerism while his actual preference is to ignore the urge to consume.

Working with Sarah gave Tom a break from business and to correlate his minimalistic ideals with yoga. The only requirement to perform the archaic practice is your presence.

Sarah in pyramid pose. Her pose is strong, determination in her face. Not even a strong gust could knock her over.

Fashion Photography by Miami Photographer Tom Clark

Once or twice a year, Tom does a collaborative shoot with fashion designer and now Asheville, NC resident, Rachel Weisberg and Miami native actor/model/singer, Carolina Pozo.

Rachel combines the elements of fashion with concerns in production sustainability, emphasizing on local scale practices. The collaboration makes perfect sense: a photographer with minimalist aesthetic and a designer with a minimal footprint. My eyes are drawn to the brass horseshoe. Carolina’s vertebras and back muscles elevate the horseshoe while it gingerly dangles from a thin, gold chain. The ocean blue dress then blends in with a blank wall, Carolina’s umber hair and vivacious tan juxtaposing.

Tom never considered these shoots to be work and I can see why. Tom, Rachel, and Carolina created a beautiful and useful image while in an atmosphere of the ideal work environment.
