camping in the Pisgah Forest by Miami Photographer Tom Clark
Now that we’re also offering commercial photography services in Asheville NC I’ve found a few more opportunities to camp out in the Carolina wilderness. This shot was taken a few miles off the blue ridge parkway after hiking a bit toward Looking Glass Rock. Now, it wouldn’t be camping in WNC without a sudden thunderstorm interrupting your dinner. Luckily we managed to get a fire going and capture this photograph just before the inevitable.

breakfast by the campfire in the Pisgah Forest back country
When the Summer starts to drag in Miami, my mind wanders to the mountains and my body soon follows. The Pisgah Forest in Western North Carolina is where we escaped to in early September. Heavy rains kept us in the tent throughout our first night in the back country, so we had dinner for breakfast while watching the sun rise behind the Blue Ridge Mountains; Baked beans, hard-boiled eggs and coffee.
Although the landscapes of WNC provide easy work for photographers, this particular trip proved to be a tough one filled with storm clouds and heavy fog. Luckily things cleared up long enough for this shot to take place. It would have been a shame to carry the camera equipment so far into the mountains only to keep it in the dry bag.
South Florida provides a photographer with an expansive wilderness, and taking the time to explore it can be very satisfying. Just be sure to check the weather reports or you may end up dealing with extreme heat and mosquitoes or heavy rain.
Jonathan Dickenson State park is located just over an hour North of Miami and has primitive campsites that get you pretty far away from it all. It provides a nice setting for setting up camp and taking some nice photographs.
For me the trees are the most interesting aspect of the Florida wilderness and I hoped to capture that appreciation in this photo of the week.
